Eisenhower was the Allies Supreme Commander during the D-Day, Normandy. During his presidency he fought the Vietnam War, World War II, Cold War, and the battle of Bulge. Dealing with the effects of the Cold War at home required complicated action because of the sensational charges of Senator Joseph R. McCarthy about Communist infiltration of government agencies. He signed the Civil Rights Bill of 1957 and the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956. Eisenhower promoted a stable economy and fought to balance the budget. He refused to further fuel the economy with politically popular tax cuts. Wage Earners relished in the prosperous decade during the Eisenhower presidency. Eisenhower’s administration went under investigation because law enforcement was curious as to how many of their “gifts” and personal purchases were allegedly funded by taxpayer money. He replied that the only personal gift he ever received from the White House was a dog.
